Devonian History
The title of the county of Devon is derived from “Dyfnaint”, a Celtic name granted to an isolated tribe of people known as the “Dumnonji” people, during the Iron Age. The meaning of this title is “deep valley dwellers”. They were a hospitable and peaceful race, very similar to those Devon inhabitants of the modern day.
A number of famous historical figures have all been born in this Devon region – Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake, both experts in the field of maritime exploration, not forgetting the dishonourable Pirate, Henry Avery, who was born and also died in Devon.
