At Bedford Holiday Apartments in Paignton we are often asked about fishing, mainly by visitors who want to become proficient at fishing on the beach or on the pier. We thought it might be a good idea to post some information about fishing lessons which can be taken most times of the year; and you don’t even have to bring your own equipment!
Torbay Fishing offers training to anyone from 12 years old upwards but if you want your children to learn aged from 12 to 16 one parent or responsible adult must accompany them. The lessons are for complete novices to any form of fishing and also for experienced fishermen who have never fished from the shore but would like to learn.
Fishing lessons
The training takes place in one of three places and which one is right for you will be decided by the professional coach, who will assess how fit you are and take your age into consideration too. The three places are the beach which is within walking distance of our holiday apartments.
Over a 3 hour period you will learn how to:
- Set up your fishing rod
- Tie knots
- Cast a line
- Feather and float
- Increase the possibility of catching fish and land them
You will also learn the correct depths in which to fish and what to do with your catch.
If you wish you can bring your own fishing rods and equipment but if you are limited on space having packed the whole family with luggage into the car for the holiday trip, there’s no need to worry since everything required is provided by Torbay Fishing. However, you will need warm clothes because even in the height of the season it can be chilly on the coast, especially in the evenings.
You will also need to bring food and drinks; a flask of hot coffee or tea is useful for evening fishing.
Fees and advice
You will go out for 3 hours with a maximum group of 3 and each person pays £45. The price includes training, all equipment and in some part covers the cost of anything that is lost such as weights, broken lines and feathers etc. Non participants will not be charged since it is free for anyone to watch you land your fish!
During the time you spend with the coach you will be given advice, if required, on the type of fishing gear you need if you decide to take it up as a permanent hobby. Such advice will always be unbiased since Torbay Fishing is not affiliated to any fishing equipment supplier and doesn’t sell fishing gear.
Catch and release Policy
After you have caught some fish, as you surely will, you may bring them back to cook them for your supper. However Torbay Fishing operates an ethical policy of releasing fish that you don’t intend to eat back into the water. So if you catch 15 and only need 6 for supper, you will be expected to let the remainder go. The coach always carries a camera so if you want to be photographed with your prize catch no moment will be lost!
Reservations
You can book fishing lessons during the day or in the evening from Monday to Friday and on any Sunday. Naturally the timing of the training will depend on the tide and weather conditions. The Torbay Fishing coach keeps an eye on the weather forecasts and will communicate with you if there are likely to be any problems caused by the weather.
Fishing lessons can be booked via email or by calling 07828 467 753. You can also leave a message including “Torbay Fishing” by text and a coach will call you back. Further information can be found on the Torbay Fishing website
